In 1995, Incubus added hip-hop DJ Fyfe (aka Gavin disconnected) to their lineup and the album Amongus Fungus independently. By the time the musicians had graduated from high school, they had already played for all ages throughout Southern California on a regular basis. Their early funk-metal sound was heavily influenced by the Red Hot Chili Peppers, but to expand in the years to thrash, rap-metal, post-grunge rock, and grinding alt-metal à la Korn or the Deftones are. Founded in 1991 in San Fernando Valley suburb of Calabasas, California, the early band lineup included the 10th grade classmates Brandon Boyd (vocals, percussion), Mike Einziger (guitar), Alex Katunich (aka Dirk Lance bass), and José Casillas (drums).
